Tasting Note I tasted this beautiful 100% chardonnay Blanc de Blancs soon after it was recently disgorged (R.D.) in the summer of 2025. I was immediately struck by the purity, lift and complexity of the aromas: bright apple, lemon, brioche pastry and crispy shallot. It is light bodied (12% ABV) very firm and taut yet tender, with racy effervescence — balanced with not a hair out of place, letting the intense, concentrated flavours hit excellent to outstanding length. This 100% chardonnay was aged for seven and a half years (a very, very long time) en tirage. It was lightly sweetened with a dosage of 4 g/L, then aged one more year in bottle. Very impressive and a knock-out value. Tasted June 2025.
Backgrounder Blue Mountain was one of the first estate wineries in Canada to make traditional method sparkling wines, ready to go when the winery opened in 1991. Ian Mavety purchased the iconic site above Vaseux Lake in 1971 and sold fruit until they opened the winery, making it is one of the oldest estate vineyards in the country. Sparkling wine accounts for about 30% of the production. Son and winemaker Matt Mavety says that this level of production provides “a great buffer in their production of other single vintage still wines affected by vintage variation.” Recently he has started using a higher portion of reserve or aged wines in the blends to add complexity. They make three other wines: Gold Label Brut, $28; Brut Rose, $35; and Brut Reserve 2016, $44 — all terrific five-star values in my books.
