L’Acadie Vineyards Prestige Brut Estate 2013

Gaspereau Valley, Nova Scotia

Tasting Note This wine is a limited library release that I was fortunate to taste over the summer. It’s a traditional method sparkling wine made from estate grown L’Acadie blanc, a white hybrid grape that was bred in Ontario but never really caught on until Nova Scotia wineries made the grape their own. Aged on lees for five years, the wine’s nose and palate show intense floral and citrus aromas with flavours of baked apple and pear. Slightly chalky and saline on the mid palate, the finish is long with toasty, yeasty notes. The Prestige Brut is a winner vintage to vintage, changing slightly but always consistently good. Certified organic and vegan.

Backgrounder Winemaker Bruce Ewert honed his sparkling winemaking skills in British Columbia and made the move to Nova Scotia to establish L’ Acadie Vineyards in 2004. It is the province’s first certified organic vineyard and winery. A pioneer in Nova Scotia’s short but storied sparkling wine history, Ewert released the region’s first commercial traditional method sparkling wine in 2008. The northwest facing slopes of the estate vineyards are well-draining schist and sandstone, set atop an ancient seabed and cooled by breezes from the Bay of Fundy. The winery and its sparkling wines have been scooping up national and international medals.

Accolades: Decanter World Wine Awards, Silver
