Tasting Note: This pinot hits a different dimension of flavour and weight than most in BC, thanks precisely to it origin in a block of old vines (earliest planted 1975) in volcanic soils, on the upper slope of the southeast facing Mt. Boucherie Vineyard. It has broad shoulders, unique savoury complexity, firm yet fine structure, and outstanding depth. The aromas are lifted with sage, shrub, sour cherry/strawberry jam, violet and barrel spice. It is medium-full bodied, open knit yet refined and elegant with firm tannin suggesting long ageing potential – which Quails’ Gate Library pinots have demonstrated for years when served at Old Vines Restaurant. The concentration and length of finish don’t quit. Best 2027 to 2040.
Backgrounder: Quails’ Gate is a pioneering winery of the Okanagan, with the Stewart family first planting vines in the 1960s. The winery opened in 1989 with its iconic Lake Okanagan views and superb Old Vines Restaurant. There are four pinot noir tiers, with Richard’s Block (named for founder Richard Stewart) being the top drop. Winemaker Jeff Del Nin calls 2022 “a great Okanagan vintage with a cool summer then perfect, long ripening conditions from the end of August to mid-October”
