What makes a wine obscure? We are keeping an open mind on this, because it is actually a very useful category into which we can slot a potpourri of interesting wines. We think you will really enjoy the selection, and find some great values, and/or real treasures for your cellar. So, we plan to run the theme three or four times per year as we encounter new obscurities.
The common theme among the selections below is that are made in small quantities – sometimes just a barrel or two. This might frustrate your chances to purchase, but then again not many other people know about them either because they are obscure. And now that you know they exist you can get onto lists to be notified next time.
Some below are new wines. Some are experimental. Some are from unexpected varieties, and unexpected places or a combination of the two. Or from very small producers selling out of their garage doors or web portals. Some are unexpectedly expensive. And yes, they are also awesome, meeting our criteria of excellence.
In the big picture, we are really just trying to let you know that there is so much vitality, energy and creativity going on in the Canadian wine industry. This space will be full of mainstream Canadian styles – sparklers, pinots, chardonnays, cab francs – from important regions and wineries across the country. But Canada’s wine culture and regulations allow for this kind of creativity, so it too is also a defining aspect of what we do.
We hope you enjoy, and if you encounter obscurities worthy of our follow up of note please let us know.
