Tasting Note: Named for the fossilized shells of the Hiatella mollusk of the Champlain Sea era (now nearby Lake Champlain), this is a fairly deeply yellow gold coloured chardonnay with a very lifted nose of barrel toast, peanut brittle, dried apple and onion crisp. It is medium weight, fairly creamy with high acidity, moderate heat (12.6%) and a sour edged intensity. The focus and length are excellent. Very impressive flavour pack on a leaner frame. I would not age this for improvement, but it should hold toward the end of the decade.
Backgrounder: Vignoble Camy has enjoyed notably success with chardonnay since its first vines were planted in 2012 in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, very near the U.S. border. It is claimed to be the warmest area of Quebec, and laced with limestone. It was founded by Isabelle Leveau and Fred Tremblay Camy, with Kelly Mason from Niagara consulting. Hiatella is a wild fermented, best barrels selection from French oak. It was bottled without filtration.
