Tasting Note – I was able to taste through a half dozen 2025 Tidal Bays during the National Wine Awards of Canada and they showed very well, with several taking medals. This is not as aromatically showy as some, as the proportion of pungent New York Muscat/Geisenheim is a bit lower. The nose still lifts off with lemon-orange citrus, spearmint, oyster shell and ginger/wasabi. It is light bodied with standard 11% alcohol, firm, dry and intense, with excellent length, indeed more than I expected, leading me to select it for inclusion in this article. It seems to transcend the notion of a light, summer refresher.
Backgrounder – Tidal Bay is one of the most creative concepts in Canadian wine, established in Nova Scotia with its first release in 2012. It was the idea of Peter Gamble, a Niagara-based consultant who had been working in Nova Scotia with Benjamin Bridge, then Lightfoot & Wolfville. Tidal Bay must be 100% Nova Scotia grown, fermented in inert vessels to a maximum of 11% alcohol, with no perceptible oak. All wines are approved by a tasting panel. They must include grapes from an approved list of hybrid white varieties, often led by L’Acadie Blanc. This example is 42% L’ Acadie with 20% vidal, 14% seyval blanc and ortega and 10% muscat. Grand Pre was founded near Wolfville as Domaine de Grand Pre in 1994 by Swiss émigré Hanspeter Stutz, and has been a rock for the Nova Scotia industry, offering a focal point for wine typicity, wine country tourism with its lovely winery and restaurant near the Acadian Grand Pre National Historic site.
