Tasting Note: by Janet Dorozynski – Gamaret is an early ripening variety cross of gamay and reichensteiner developed in Switzerland and first planted in Quebec by Domaine du Nival. Un de Ces Quatre is one of the very few 100% single varietal gamarets produced in North America and the 2025 vintage showcases a fresh, energetic expression of the grape. Dry, but remarkably juicy, the wine maintains the variety’s signature depth with fresh acidity and fine, well-structured structured tannins. Flavours and aromas of raspberry, red currents and ripe cherries mingle with savoury spice notes on the medium long finish. Despite the warm 2025 growing session, the wine is refreshing and complete, with an alcohol content of 11%. Available in 750ml bottles and magnums.
Winery Backgrounder: Domaine du Nival is located in the northern reaches of the Monteregian Hills, just east of Montreal south of the St. Lawrence. It is a spectacular setting where six hectares of vineyards and 100 wild apple trees thrive amongst forests and the Yamaska River. The estate was founded and operated by Matthieu Beauchemin and his partner Fannie Boulanger, and runs on organic and regenerative agriculture emphasizing native yeast fermentations and minimal intervention in the cellar. The winery is focused on vitis vinifera grape varieties – pinot noir, albariño, chardonnay, and gamaret and petite arvine from Switzerland, along with the French hybrid vidal. Domaine du Nival also explores the crossover between orchard and vineyard, with the standout Métissage sur marc Gamaret, a dry cider from wild apples that is macerated on the skins of gamaret grapes after pressing. Like many of Quebec’s top wineries, production is small and wines sell out quickly from their website.
