Tasting Note: This is a pale and light bodied pinot, typical of Nova Scotia editions. It has a fairly lifted and slightly unripe/green nose of redcurrant, sour cherry, a touch of rose and shrubby earthiness. It is light bodied, edgy and tart with high acid, and slightly brittle tannin. The length is very good, the finish a touch bitter. Lots of life and energy here, and I suspect it will offer a bit more finesse and elegance in a year or two.
Backgrounder: Lightfoot & Wolfville (est 2015) is a leading producer of organically and biodynamically grown sparkling and still wines in the Annapolis Valley. Forty acres are planted on two distinct sites along the shores of the Minas Basin, an inlet of the Bay of Fundy, where slopes extend the frost-free period and provide excellent exposure. The Ancienne Pinot Noir is grown on the south-facing “Oak Island Vineyard” in Avonport. The 2022 growing season was the warmest in three years, providing good conditions for still wines in particular. This was hand-harvested on October 21st. Wild fermentation (20% whole cluster) was followed by 21 months aging in mostly used French oak.
